Summary Description
Reporting to the Tax Partner or to the Founding Partner, the Director, U.S. Tax and/or International Tax acts as a strategic advisor to the firm’s clients.
This professional will be responsible for further developing the firm’s international advisory practice and/or its integrated U.S. tax advisory and compliance practice.
The incumbent will also be responsible for strengthening the team’s human resources to complement its existing members, particularly the Director of International Tax. In this capacity, they will work in advisory services, research, and quality control—particularly regarding compliance—as well as providing technical support to the team.
The Director, U.S. Tax and/or International Tax also provides advice on international tax planning, tax treaties, structuring of foreign transactions, relocation, transfer pricing, and more. Depending on their experience, they may also have the opportunity to advise on estate and probate planning with cross-border elements.
The person in this role will actively contribute to the firm’s growth, with the potential to advance to a partnership position.
More specifically, their responsibilities will include:
- Advising clients on complex international tax issues (U.S. tax compliance, international tax planning, tax treaties and transfer pricing, reorganizations, mergers and acquisitions, BEPS, U.S. and European taxation).
- Contributing to the analysis of Canada/U.S. cross-border issues as well as those involving other international jurisdictions.
- Participating in the drafting of service proposals and ensuring rigorous follow-up on engagements and deadlines.
- Foster a relationship of trust and ensure effective communication with clients.
- Collaborate closely with other service lines.
- Serve as a mentor to more junior tax professionals and participate in talent development.
- Play an active role in developing and retaining the firm’s client base. Represent the firm and its clients.
- Raise the firm’s profile by participating in conferences, publications, and networking events.
Required Qualifications
Education
- Graduate degree in taxation (Master’s, D.Fisc., or DESS in taxation)
- Professional designation: CPA, MBA, EA (currently pursuing or accepted), or legal training (an asset)
- Specialized training in U.S. or international tax law
Professional Experience
- Ideally, a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience
- Experience in U.S. and/or international taxation
Skills
- Knowledge of cross-border issues, particularly—but not limited to—those between Canada and the United States
- Proficiency with tax compliance software and research databases (iFirm, ProSystem fx, etc.)
- Expertise in international tax planning, transfer pricing, and cross-border compliance, or excellent knowledge of U.S. tax law (IRC, FATCA, GILTI, Subpart F, etc.)
- Bilingualism in French and English, both spoken and written
